The US-Iran MoU is on the brink: Tehran closed Hormuz again, Israel keeps striking Lebanon despite ceasefire, and Vance flies to Switzerland to rescue talks that could collapse before Sunday ends.

🚨 OPENING

The MoU isn't worth the paper it was signed on. Not yet.

Four days after the signing ceremony at Versailles, the US-Iran agreement is already under extreme stress. Tehran announced Saturday the reclosure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon as a violation of Clause 1 of the MoU — the clause requiring the end of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. The IRGC naval division issued direct warnings to vessels: stay away from the Strait, you risk mines or naval fire.

US Central Command responded that the waterway is open and that Iran does not control it. Two incompatible narratives colliding in real time, as tankers slow down and markets hover around $80 a barrel.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance departed Saturday for Switzerland — a second attempt to reach Bürgenstock after Friday's talks were once again cancelled. Alongside him: Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and a technical delegation. On the other side, Iran already has its team on the ground, led by Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf. Pakistan and Qatar are serving as mediators. The first session will be dedicated — not by coincidence — to Lebanon.

📍 MILITARY SITUATION

🇮🇱 ISRAEL-LEBANON
Despite the ceasefire renewed on Friday, Israel continued striking southern Lebanon. At least 32 people were killed in the past 24 hours, with more than 100 air raids since dawn Saturday in southern Lebanon alone. Lebanon's Health Ministry puts the total death toll since the start of the conflict at over 4,057. A Lebanese army soldier was killed in an Israeli strike on the Kfar Rumman-Nabatieh road — Beirut protested strongly. The IDF confirmed the death of another Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon, the fifth since the MoU took effect.

---

🇮🇷 HORMUZ / IRGC
Iran declares Hormuz "closed" for MoU violation. IRGC navy broadcast direct warnings to vessels in transit. Iranian accusation: the US failed to guarantee an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, which is the condition of Clause 1. On June 18, commercial crossings had reached 25 vessels per day — the highest since mid-April. Now the curve has flatlined.

---

🕊️ SWITZERLAND / DIPLOMACY
Vance at Bürgenstock to structure the negotiations. Technical talks cover nuclear issues, sanctions and — first on the agenda — Lebanon. Iranian hardliners back home warn Araghchi: going to Geneva without a full ceasefire in Lebanon means greenlighting violations of the entire agreement.

🌡️ CALIBRA — The Iranian delegation departed anyway, signaling Tehran still wants negotiations. The Hormuz closure is tactical, not strategic.

🔑 KEY DEVELOPMENT OF THE DAY

The real fight isn't over Hormuz. It's over Clause 1.

The 14-point MoU signed on June 17 requires an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon — but neither Israel nor Hezbollah signed it. Washington committed to guaranteeing something it does not directly control. Tehran knows this and uses the contradiction as leverage: every Israeli violation in Lebanon technically becomes a US breach, justifying a Hormuz reclosure. It is an automatic escalation mechanism built into the agreement itself. As long as Israel refuses to withdraw from Lebanon — something Netanyahu has explicitly ruled out — the MoU will remain permanently under threat. Washington finds itself mediating between its own priorities (a deal with Iran) and its own ally (Israel) that is sabotaging that same priority.

☄️ DON'T LOOK UP

Today: Energy prices remain above pre-war levels. Hormuz reclosed again delays any return to normality.

Within 30 days: If Swiss negotiations fail, Brent climbs back above $90. July energy bills already revised upward.

If Hormuz remains closed beyond July: Oil market normalization slides to 2027. Structural energy inflation in Europe for another 12-18 months.

⚡ ENERGY AND MARKETS

Brent around $80.57 (futures), with a daily trading range between $78.77 and $80.81. WTI at $76.51. The wartime peak hit $126.41 over the past 52 weeks. Last week Brent fell roughly 8.5% — but Saturday's Hormuz reclosure temporarily reversed the trend. Hormuz: 25 commercial crossings on June 18, then stopped. Approximately 500 large commercial vessels still stranded in the region, according to Kpler.

📌 PERCEPTION INDEX - how to read it

⬇️ YOU'RE UNDERESTIMATING IT - more important than it seems
⬆️ YOU'RE OVERESTIMATING IT - emotional reaction > real weight
🌡️ CALIBRATE - reality is more nuanced than the dominant narrative

📊 PERCEPTION INDEX - SUMMARY

🔴 Iran "reclosing" Hormuz ................. 🌡️ Negotiating tactic, not a return to war
🔴 MoU at risk of collapse .................. ⬇️ Framework holds but is seriously fragile
🔴 Lebanon as detonator ..................... ⬇️ The most underestimated variable in the entire deal
🟡 Vance in Switzerland ..................... ⬆️ Physical presence matters less than substance
🟡 Brent at $80 ............................ 🌡️ Not peace, not war: uncertainty priced in
🟡 IRGC warnings to vessels ................. ⬆️ Propaganda, not an operational blockade right now
🟢 Iranian delegation departed anyway ....... ⬇️ Positive signal underplayed by most media

🎖️ PERCEPTION DEFCON INDEX

🔴 DEFCON 2 — Agreement under siege

The MoU exists, but its architecture is already cracking on day 4. Hormuz declared closed, Lebanon in flames, the first negotiating session not yet underway. The risk is not that the war resumes — it is that the agreement quietly dissolves without anyone wanting to admit it.

Escalation triggers:
— Israel strikes Beirut or hits IRGC assets in Lebanon
— Iran physically blocks a Saudi tanker from transiting the Strait

De-escalation signals:
— Concrete agreement on partial IDF withdrawal from Lebanon within 72 hours
— First nuclear technical session launched at Bürgenstock before Sunday evening
